AMSTERDAM - In India=20 worden door Britse wetenschappers twee kleine haren = onderzocht die=20 mogelijk afkomstig zijn van een reuzenaap uit India. Tot nu = toe=20 kunnen ze het haar aan geen enkele bestaande diersoort = koppelen.=20

De minuscule haartjes - 33 en 44 millimeter lang - zijn = gevonden=20 bij de Garo-heuvels in het noordoosten van India. Dat meldde = de=20 Britse krant The Independent zondag. De = bevolking in dat=20 gebied vertelt al eeuwen verhalen over de 'mande barung': = een drie=20 meter lange mensachtige aap, die zich schuil zou houden in = het=20 oerwoud.

Door wetenschappers wordt de reuzenaap beschouwd als de = Indiase=20 variant van de wereldberoemde Yeti, oftewel Verschrikkelijke = Sneeuwman - een sprookjesfiguur dus.

Maar de Britse primaatdeskundige Ian Redford is daar niet = meer zo=20 zeker van. Hij heeft de twee haren tot in detail bestudeerd = met een=20 team onderzoekers aan de Oxford Brookes University.

Zwarte beer

Toch kan hij nog steeds niet vaststellen van welke = diersoort ze=20 afkomstig zijn. "We weten in ieder geval zeker dat de haren = niet van=20 een Aziatische zwarte beer zijn en niet van een wild zwijn", = verklaarde hij. "Ze lijken ook niet op haren van de = verschillende=20 makaken die in het gebied leven. Dit blijft voorlopig dus = een=20 mysterie."

In de komende weken wil Redford de haren grondiger = onderzoeken=20 met een DNA-test en een extreem sterke microscoop. Maar hij = sluit=20 niet uit dat hij te maken heeft met de vacht van een nog = onbekende=20 diersoort.

"Ik vind dit heel spannend", aldus Redford. "Dit is het = eerste=20 tastbare bewijs dat de Yeti misschien zou kunnen bestaan. = Maar ook=20 als het geen Yeti is, hebben we mogelijk te maken met een = apensoort=20 die we nog niet kennen. Nog maar twee jaar geleden werd er = een nieuw=20 soort makaak ontdekt in het noorden van India. In de jungle = zijn nog=20 genoeg verre uithoeken waar een onbekende aap zich kan = schuilhouden=20 voor de mens."
